The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for an Athletic Manager with Parks & Recreation.
The employee performs difficult professional work planning, organizing and promoting a comprehensive athletic program; does related work as required.
This position is a division manager within the Park & Recreation Department with the overall responsibility for planning and administering a comprehensive athletic program for citizens of all ages.
Position is under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director.
Immediate supervision is exercised over the work of Recreation Workers and other subordinates within this division.
Essential Functions of Position:
plans, directs and promotes comprehensive athletic programs for various age groups in football, soccer, softball, baseball, basketball, kickball, tennis, and volleyball;
establishes policies with respect to scheduling, safety, registration of participants, payment of game officials and insurance;
prepares and justifies division budget;
controls expenditures;
initiates studies of user and program fees;
reviews and submits requisitions for purchasing;
supervises the work and operations of the Athletics Division;
performs personnel functions and interacts with the public;
inventories all player, team, and game equipment and ensures proper maintenance and storage;
prepares practice, league, and tournament schedules;
recruits and coordinates volunteer coaches;
trains officials, scorekeepers, and site personnel in supervising sports;
makes periodic inspections of athletic activities and facilities and evaluates programs;
conducts coaches, officials, and site personnel organizational meetings for all sports;
drafts publicity and delivers speeches;
recommends purchases of athletic equipment and prepares budget;
checks eligibility of participants and settles any dispute that might arise;
keeps records and makes reports of league and other activities;
recruits and makes recommendations for hiring and training personnel;
evaluates employee's work performance;
coordinates the scheduling of all recreation athletic facilities for department use and user groups;
coordinates the scheduling of all recreation athletic facilities with the school system;
solicits and promotes departmental sporting events;
coordinates daily with the Park Services Division to ensure facilities are prepared for use;
performs related tasks as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of major sports such as baseball, softball, football, soccer, tennis and basketball and general knowledge of other sports; thorough knowledge of modern principles and practices of recreation and physical education; ability to plan and supervise athletic programs; initiative and resourcefulness in the solution of difficult athletic problems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with participants and the general public.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from a college university of recognized standing with major work in physical education or recreation and considerable experience in the promotion of athletic activities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
